I was inspired by the Netflix documentary 'What the Health.' The documentary talks about a lot of cancer causing foods, specifically labeling meat and dairy as one of the main culprits.
No, I'm not going to tell all of you to go Vegan on me! But I wanted to give you my two cents.
1. What is a Carcinogen?
This word gets tossed around a lot, but what is it?
A carcinogen is a substance capable of causing cancer.
Just because something contains a carcinogen, that does not mean you will get cancer. If you are pre-disposed to cancer through your genes then adding more carcinogens through diet is something you'd want to avoid.
2. Substances that contain carcinogens.
I'll get to food in a minute, but there are some known substances that contain carcinogens that have been linked to cancer.
Tobacco
Asbestos
Alcohol
Certain foods
3. Foods containing carcinogens
What I took from this documentary is that we should avoid these foods if we can....or like everything moderation is key!
Processed Meats
bacon
hot dogs
salami
beef jerky
Salted Fish
Red meat: veal, pork, beef, lamb
Overly BBQ'd meats (cooking for too long on a grill)
Liquids hotter than 150F
Soda
Salmon
White Pasta
White Breads
Canned Tomatos
Milk (Just no more than 2 glasses/ day)
GMO products (additives to make foods, such as fruit, bigger, juicer, fattier)
4. The Take-Away
These items, if consumed in high doses can increase your risk for cancer especially if genetically, you are pre-disposed to it.
Organic is a better option when choosing fruits.
When choosing meat, it's not just about getting organic meat, the fields in which the animals graze should not be treated which fertilizers, etc. because that is getting into our foods.
If this is important to you, look into where you are buying your meat and find out how the animals are fed and treated.
