I don't know about you, but I'm over feeling this holiday bloat! The extra sugars, carbonation, and salt have made me feel like I've gain ten pounds in a short time. Logically, I know this is not the case, but it doesn't make me want to put on my bikini anytime soon.

Some of you might be able to relate to my pain and i'm sorry if you do. But...lets focus on the solution to this ever-growing problem. This bulge has gots to go!!

1. Bloat vs. belly fat

  • It totally feels like weight gain. It looks like weight gain. The numbers on the scale have gone up, I must be getting fat, right?!!

  • Luckily, this isn't always the case. Here are the differences between being bloated and actual belly fat.

  • Belly fat will be there morning, noon, and night. Bloat can come and go throughout the day. So, if it just appears after that late night meal you are in the clear.

  • If it's belly fat you should be able to grab it with your hand. Bloat you cannot physically grasp.

2. Foods that make me feel like this!

  • Here are some foods that cause bloat. I have also included foods to eat instead that won't make you feel so big. You Are Welcome!

  • Carbonated beverages - Instead have: water, tea, or coffee.

  • Cruciferous Veggies (ex. broccoli) - Instead have: zucchini, lettuce, spinach, or cucumbers.

  • Beans - Instead have grains, meat or quinoa.

  • Wheat - Replace with gluten-free alternatives or pure oats, coconut flour, or buckwheat.

  • Dairy products - Instead have yogurt or dairy alternatives like soy, almond, or rice milk.

  • Apples - Instead eat grapefruit, blueberries, or bananas.

3. How do I stop this from happening again?!

  • There are a few lifestyle things you can do to prevent bloating.

  • Sip don't chug water - Drinking too much water too fast can cause swelling in the stomach. Try to drink water consistently throughout the day to avoid become overly thirsty and drinking too much at one time.

  • Small Meals - Eat more than just 3 times per day. If you find yourself hungry in-between lunch and dinner, have a small meal. Similarly to water, it will keep you from eating too much in one sitting which can decrease bloating of the stomach.

  • Trade gum for mints. Sucking on a mint instead of chewing up can help reduce the amount of air you swallow. This can directly decrease symptoms of bloating or feeling bloated.

  • Take your coffee black. Drinking black coffee can speed up your digestive system and help you flush out that excess water.

  • Move more. Moving around can help your circulation and reduce bloating. Next time you're feeling that uncomfortable bulge do yourself a favor and go for a walk.

I don't know about you, but I'm definitely applying these tips. I feel so much better about my body and self when i'm eating smaller meals and exercising more!
