There is so much information out there about what makes you put on body fat. Is fat hereditary? Is going on a low-fat diet a good idea? How come I keep storing fat in my thighs?

I hear these questions all the time from my clients so today, we'll dive into what is the truth about fat!

1. Maybe she's born with it?

  • Unfortunately, unlike Maybelline (like what I did there?!), we ARE born with a certain amount of fat cells in our body.

  • Overweight people tend to have more fat cells than our leaner friends, BUT that doesn't mean you are destined to be fat. That also doesn't mean that if you don't have very many fat cells that you can't get big...YOU CAN!

  • Our fat cells swell and shrink throughout of lives so it is our job to keep those cells at bay rather than bringing them to life!

2. A Mind Of Their Own

  • Fat cells behave differently in different parts of the body.

  • Some people might store them more in their hips, others in their stomachs. This is the reason you might bulk up in certain places.

  • Fat Cells also attract inflammation so on top of having more fat cells in certain places, now add bloat on top of it to create a real recipe of disaster.

3. Sugar, Not Fat, Makes You Fat

  • Did you know that there are over 200 names for sugar?

  • Dextrose, Fructose, Glucose, Maltose...just to name a few.

  • The excess sugar in our body turns into fat. So unless you are exercising up the wazoo...if you're overdoing the sugar factory...then you could be heading for trouble.

  • Fat, on the other hand, is more complex. We need good fats in our body. Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated are the fats we want in our diet.

  • This is the reason low-fat diets are NOT the way to go. Our low-fat diets tend to be HIGH sugar diets.

4. Ketosis

  • This is the process of turning that fat into fuel and using it as energy.

  • The goal with a Ketone diet is to consume less carbs so that your fat becomes your primary fuel source.

  • If you're consuming the same amount of carbs and fat, the carbs will win out and your carbs will convert into sugars to be used as energy. The fat will remain in your body.

  • If you are struggling with those ever growing fat cells, try getting your body into Ketosis and use the fat for fuel instead!

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me! Until next time.
